District level competitions were held and the results are in! Basha FFA students placed 1st in three areas of the competition. The meat team members include: Kellan Fisher, Max Hodge, and Cody Lane. The nursery landscape team consists of: Dylan Lane, Jose Alatriste, Sarah Serva and Courtney Kennedy. The wildlife team includes Dallon Klein, David Weyenberg, Addie Westmoreland, Aubri Everett, and Brook Lloyd. Placing 6th in the horse evaluation category were team members: Nicole Fayden, Justen Ollendick and Serina Sanchez. Congratulations to all teams on a commendable victory!

The 2010 State Proficiency Award Winners have been named. Congratulations to the BHS and HHS FFA chapters for their representation(s). Dylan Lane was the state winner for first place in both the Agricultural Services-Entrepreneurship/Placement category and in Landscape Management –Entrepreneurship/Placement. Taking second (gold) in the Beef Production Entrepreneurship category was none other than Dylan Lane! Placing third (bronze) in the Specialty Animal Production- Entrepreneurship/Placement category was HHS Agriscience student, Jennifer Jentile. Thank you, Dylan and Jennifer for such great representation of CUSD.

Basha High FFA students took part in a district leadership competition with great showing. Payton Collins placed first in Agriscience (Biomedical/Environmental), while a group consisting of Max Hodge, Haylee Rogers, Brooke Lloyd, Aubree Waning, Justen Olendick, and Brittany Lane all placed first in Parliamentary Procedure. All first place teams will advance to the state level in June.

Areas of competition included impromptu speaking, business ethics, public speaking, entrepreneurship, word processing, marketing and future business leader. Amanda Yocum and her future leaders competed in the State Leadership Conference in Tucson. Three of nine students made it to the final rounds in their events. Kelsey Ferguson outshone 62 other students in the Job Interview finals, while Carlos Caraveo & Ryan Dang made it to the finals in Emerging Business Issues. As a chapter, BHS was one of three schools to receive the Silver Program of Work award showcasing a demonstration of all the activities they have completed throughout the school year. Lastly, 5 students rightfully earned the Future Level of the Business Achievement Awards: Brianna Houlihan, Kelsey Ferguson, Chris Valledor, Jessica Hauver, Tiyler Hart. A job well done by our own future business leaders!

The Engineering Design Program instructed by Keith Tomaszewicz, was commended in an article by Michelle Reese of the East Valley Tribune. Reese highlights the benefits of using the CAD program for technical and engineering work, which most employers have implemented in their engineering programs. Dual credits are soon to be offered to those interested in further pursuing this field in the future.

The DECA Eastern Area Competition resulted in many BHS honorees. For the category of Sports Team Decision Making awarded the following students: Zach Toot, Vincent Crupi, Brandon Ngo, Cody Green and Ben Stone. Cody Green and Ben Stone placed FIRST in the overall category. The Travel and Tourism category awarded 2nd place to Meghan Hussey. Heather Shamburg won 3 areas of competition: 3rd place in the written test, 1st place in role play and an honorable 1st place, shared with Bethany Driver in an overall category. Bethany Driver also took 2nd place in the written test portion and 1st place in the role play portion of the competition.

A/V Technology students at BHS took Chandler's Multicultural Festival by storm in scooping up first and second place honors for the submission in the 'Creative Expression Competition.' First place winners include Robert Flores, Stephen Todd, Devon Spann, and Timothy Hall. They will be receiving their award at the city council meeting in January. Second place winners include Patrick McNamara, Nicholas Sokol, and [early graduate] Stephanie Klawiter.

EVIT sent 22 ECE students to the FCCLA national conference on April 13-14, 2010 held in Glendale, AZ. Out of 22 students, three Chandler High EVIT students took home medals for their presentations. Brenda Martinez was awarded a silver medal in the competition on Dating Violence Prevention, Norma Maldonado took home a bronze medal for her winning presentation on Child Abuse, and Laura Gonzalez won the gold for her presentation on Teen Driving Safety.

CHS DECA students, Amber Butler, Nicole Miller, and Haley Wilson placed 4th at DECA's International Development Conference. Their winning efforts were showcased in a collaborative 'Sports and Entertainment' 30 page research project. If that wasn't enough, another CHS team took 3rd. Writing a comprehensive 30 page paper on Creative Marketing, authors Victoria Ramirez and Lindsay Rather. This competition ranked 2 International teams from one school….a rare feat indeed!

On March 1st and 2nd, 2400 DECA members from across the state met in Phoenix at the largest DECA conference in the history of Arizona to compete for the right to go on to the international level of competition in Louisville, KY in April. Chandler High DECA took 26 students. After preparing for months, they once again owned the competition in the number of students that we had place!Of the 26 students from CHS DECA, 18 were on stage in 11 different events! Placing 6th overall in Quick Serve Restaurant Management – Connor Doheny Placing top 5 in their events and qualifying to travel to Louisville, KY are: 3rd place in Sports and Entertainment Marketing – Sydney Mullen 3rd place in Buying and Merchandising Team Event – Amber Butler and Haley Wilson 4th place in Quick Serve Restaurant Management – Kasey Brumfiel Placing top 4 in their written projects and qualifying to travel to Louisville, KY

CUSD has 16 junior and senior high students from robotics going to a week long science camp at NAU over the summer. These normally run $885 but Alberto Esparza through Si Se Puede was able to get scholarships from NAU that cover their cost. They are staying on campus but are also doing science at Sunset Crater and the Grand Canyon to name a few places.

Sam presented in a break out session, the MOODLE program that Sam has successfully implemented in his classroom for over 4 years. Among other accomplishments at this conference, Derick Sayer, a 2009 senior received a $500 scholarship and Brooke Daley and Josh Mayes were awarded a bronze medal for their corroborating efforts in creating a board displaying the Chandler Chapter and presentation to the judges. Previous years' chapter reporter, Shaila Shields, received a bronze rating in response to a hand made scrapbook showcasing the HHS FFA chapter annual activities.

Seven of twelve members of the Hamilton's Interact Club are also Culinary students in Orlando Chaney's classroom. Recently this club helped package and deliver over 5000 source directory books to the Sun Lakes community. Generous volunteerism was displayed by Aren Drabe, Danielle Forney, Jaymie Frazier, Diana Hoang, Cinthia Padilla, Jordan Patton, and Symone Walker. Also joining in these mountainous efforts are Dominique Baraza, Karli Hartwig, Deonte Harville, Jayvon Harville, and Sazid Rabbani.

Club President and Vice- President, Sazid Rabbani and Jordan Patton, respectively addressed the Rotary members explaining how they apply their class lessons to servicing others in the Chandler community. The HHS Interactive club has assisted Sun Lakes in many philanthropic efforts within the community hosting breakfasts, selling event tickets and spearheading culinary fund raising. Some 80 plus high school students and Rotarians attend this weekend camp attending seminars on leadership, teamwork, and conflict resolution. A great weekend of networking and learning how to survive the rigors of being a teen.

Five Hamilton High DECA students were within the top 3 placements in the Sports and Entertainment Marketing Plan (30 pages) category and the Travel and Tourism Team Event. Placing 3rd in the Sports and Entertainment Marketing plan are Samantha Paquette, Angelica Gonzales, and Gabby Sain. Second place winners in the Travel and Tourism Team Event are Eric Barta and Joshua Mitchell. Medals were distributed to other students for the testing category of the competition. A silver medal was awarded to Jake McCormick. Bronze medals were awarded to Joshua Mitchell, Eric Barta, Tynnisha Hamilton, and Trey Hayden. Congratulations to HHS DECA for their great representation of CUSD.

The HHS DECA chapter took students to competition at MCC against roughly 600 other students in the east valley. The CUSD students excelled in their competitions making placements in various areas. Alex Salazar took 1st place in her Entrepreneurship (10 pg.) written project and presentation. Amador Chavez and Derek Gensberg each won 2nd place in the Sports and Entertainment Marketing category. Joshua Mitchell and Eric Barta both took 2nd place in the Travel and Toursim category. Samantha Paquette and Angelica Gonzales each were awarded 3rd place in the Sports and Entertainment Marketing category. Lastly, Phoenix Eby was named a Food Marketing Finalist. Kudos to HHS DECA!!

In the first and possibly the most prestigious competition, the U.S. Congressional Art Contest, Brittany Patchen was awarded first place and Sadie Gordon was awarded second place. This is a 2-D contest competing against paintings, watercolors, etc. Brittany's photo will hang for one year in the corridor between the Russell Senate Office building and the Capitol, while Sadie's photo will be displayed in the Congressional Offices in Washington D.C. Way to go, girls!! An outstanding accomplishment

Five PHS students have qualified for the international level of competition for DECA. Notably placing in 3 top areas of the state level of competition include accolades to Hannah Sych and Sarah Moen, first place winners for their 30 page business plan. Third place honors were awarded to Jarel Mitchell and Jalen Jackson in the Business Law and Ethics category. Molly Bowes-Janzen took 3rd place in the area of Principles of Marketing. Perry High - (2009-2010)
The DECA club of Perry High School held its Second Annual Mr. PHS contest in February. In front of a packed house, three PHS men were chosen as school representatives. Anthony Vizzera was this year's MR. PHS! Runners up were Jesse Stauber and Will Schommer in second and third place respectively. The MR. PHS contest has proven to be successful fundraiser under the leadership of Heather Berlin, DECA coordinator/Marketing Instructor.

The PHS DECA club hosted a very successful and heartfelt walk for cancer. The 'PUMA Prowl' generated great interest and community participation and was able to raise a hefty donation of $5400 to the Arizona Cancer Center.

Hannah Sych, a PHS DECA student, represented Perry High in Louisville, Kentucky at the DECA Internationals. Hannah placed 15th out of 15,000 students in her area of writing a 30-page business plan. Way to go, Hannah!!
